How to Make Money Online with Affiliate Marketing – An Interview with Michelle from Making Sense of Cents

A few months ago, I decided to give this whole how to make money online with affiliate marketing thing a reality. Only problem was that there are a million places I can go. Where should I start?

I was very lucky, at the same time I was looking, I managed to interview Michelle from Making Sense of Cents for a Behind the Screen Interview. Here is my interview with Michelle about affiliate marketing.

Can you tell us a little bit about your site and your connection with affiliate marketing?

Hello! My name is Michelle and I run the personal finance blog Making Sense of Cents. On my blog Making Sense of Cents, I talk a lot about the numerous ways to make extra money, how to save money, reaching your passions and goals, traveling full-time, and many other interesting topics. I love running Making Sense of Cents and I am very happy that this is now my full-time career, my business, and pretty much my life.

It’s funny though, because before the summer of 2011, I didn’t even know what blogs were. I started my blog that month with the aim of teaching people how to save money as well as journaling my personal finance journey after reading a magazine that featured a personal finance website in one of their articles. I became extremely interested in that website and my interest in blogging just grew from there. This is interesting and hilarious because before that same summer, I had no idea about what blogs were, that they could even make money, or anything along those lines.

What got you started in affiliate marketing?

I’ve been interested in affiliate marketing for a few years, but I never thought it was possible before. This is because I believed that a blogger had to have a large following and a lot of traffic in order to be successful with affiliate marketing. This is a common myth with bloggers and online influencers!

However, I didn’t let that myth hold me back for very long. One day I decided to give myself a goal of earning affiliate income, and I worked towards achieving that goal. I started by making a little bit each month, and then it just continued to grow month after month. I now know that you don’t need a ton of page views or a huge following in order to make a great income through affiliate marketing.

I love affiliate income because it can feel quite passive. You can create just one blog post or social media post, and potentially earn money from it years down the line, as long as you maintain it and keep generating traffic to it. With affiliate marketing, I can enjoy life more and know that I am still able to earn a great living promoting products that I use and enjoy.

Think about it this way: If you already enjoy using a certain service or product, why not earn money when you talk about it? It makes no sense not to!

Tell us a little bit about the first time you made an affiliate sale?

I honestly don’t remember what my first affiliate sale was for, but I do remember being extremely excited about it! It’s great being able to make an income online doing what you love, and it’s even better if it’s passive income like through affiliate marketing.

Can anyone get into affiliate marketing or do you need to have a big site already?

You definitely do not need a big website or a crazy high number of page views each month in order to get into affiliate marketing. I believe that anyone with an influencer platform can be successful with affiliate marketing, regardless of page views. It’s all about approaching your audience and affiliate marketing in the correct way so that you can do it effectively and efficiently. These are all things that I teach in my Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing.

Is it possible to use affiliate marketing if you don’t have a website?

Affiliate marketing is for pretty much anyone and everyone. If you even just have a social media account, you can find a way to effectively promote it- without being “salesy” and without scaring followers away. There is a correct way to promote affiliate offers, which is what I teach in Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing.

Since starting your course I am seeing more affiliate sales. What have you noticed from your students after taking this course?

My Quick and Honest Review

My honest review of this is that if you know nothing about affiliate marketing, this is the best place to start. If you know a little and want to up your “A” game, this is where you go.

One thing that I think is completely undervalued in the extras is the Facebook Group. This is a great group of people who actively participate and share. We are all in this together and it’s great to be a part of a community that all have the same goals and support each other while doing it.
